Job Summary

This position serves as an Electronics Engineer within the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Airspace Systems (NAS) Engineering teams, providing advanced engineering expertise in support of NAS systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans and accomplishes complex projects and work activities under the limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced engineer.
  • Performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments and plans the implementation of projects/programs under limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, or more experienced engineer.
  • Provides engineering experience in support of one or more assigned systems/programs within the FAA's National Airspace System (NAS).
  • Provides guidance to lower-level staff on the resolution of difficult technical problems associated with continued operation of commissioned facilities and resolution of problems related to the introduction of new systems into the NAS.
  • Makes recommendations to management regarding in-service improvements in the analysis, design, and implementation of system-wide hardware/firmware modifications; service life extension; failure analysis/support in response to NAS related problems beyond the assigned repair capability of the field, NAS configuration management; and quality assurance.
  • Applies experience and advanced knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to electronic engineering to accomplish assignments and to develop plans and techniques to improve programs and policies.
  • Understands how new NAS system deployments interact with or are affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the major subdivision and LOB/SO when developing, integrating, and implementing solutions to diverse, complex problems.
  • Typical assignments may include system design and integration; extensive research; and shared responsibility for project/program management.
  • May conduct component tests and system level testing in a lab and on installed systems to verify vendor specification compliance and system performance.
  • Analyzes and resolves a wide variety of user problems and system failures involving difficult technical problems of integrated electronics systems requiring high reliability and safety.
  • Defines, plans, and organizes assigned resources to accomplish organizational objectives. Allocates resources to accomplish small work-activities within established schedules. Contacts are internal and external. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities.
  • Contributes to the preparation of management/technical reports or contractual documents, and may be called upon to communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties.
  • Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments, but allow considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches.
  • Assignments typically require solutions that are to be derived by interpreting and extrapolating from situations that were faced in the past.
  • Provides recommendations to improve work processes. Resolves most problems impacting system performance of facilities and systems. Informs management of problems that require their attention.
Requirements
  • Basic Requirements:
    • A degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
    • Or a combination of education and experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
  • Specialized Experience:
    • One year of experience using Agile or Scaled Agile Framework for work/project management.
    • Experience collecting, compiling, and analyzing data.
    • Experience identifying and recommending solutions for complex/difficult problems.
    • Experience communicating effectively to targeted audiences.
    • Experience collaborating work, paired work, and completing projects in a team setting.
    • Experience designing modifications to NAS systems, including the development of all required artifacts.
  • Quality Ranking Factor (QRF):
    • Well-qualified applicants will demonstrate knowledge, skill, and ability to manage work using JIRA or other workflow management platforms.
    • Knowledge, skill, and ability to identify process improvement needs and implement changes to workflow processes.
