Position Overview

The New York Public Library is seeking Senior Educational Facilitators for its After School initiative, which offers complimentary, drop-in academic assistance and enrichment activities for school-aged youth across various library locations.
This role entails a commitment of 16 hours per week, with shifts scheduled on weekdays during afternoon hours. Floating Facilitators will provide essential support in the absence of regular staff, traveling to different library branches to ensure continuity of service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Travel regularly to multiple library locations to deliver critical support in the absence of assigned personnel.
  • Engage proactively with program supervisors and branch colleagues to coordinate travel assignments effectively.
  • Facilitate daily academic support services, assisting children aged 6-12 during peak after-school hours.
  • Work collaboratively with co-facilitators to welcome and engage children in a dynamic library environment.
  • Provide individualized and group support across various subjects, including mathematics, reading, and science.
  • Communicate program details and expectations to parents and caregivers, directing them to branch staff for further assistance.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as tracking attendance and managing program supplies.
  • Offer constructive feedback to branch and central staff regarding program challenges and successes.
  • Design and implement engaging enrichment activities that foster a love for learning.
  • Support youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program, providing guidance and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Children's Librarian and other staff to enhance library programs.
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions to promote professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate program with at least two years completed.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in educational settings with children or teens.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring across elementary subjects.

Skills:

  • Effective communication skills with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a busy library setting.
  • Willingness to travel to various library locations.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in elementary subjects.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Google and Microsoft Office.
