Job Summary

The Supreme Court of Ohio is seeking an experienced professional to fill the position of Policy Counsel, Children and Families Section within the Court Services Division.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides assistance to internal and external justice system partners through the dissemination of information, technical assistance, and education in key functional areas with a focus on domestic relations, juvenile, and probate courts.
  • Monitors innovative trends, assists in identifying effective practices, and disseminates information to judges and local court staff and justice system partners.
  • Works closely with and provides administrative support to relevant advisory committees and/or commissions.
  • Acts as staff liaison for subcommittees working on projects related to court policy and to develop recommendations and deliverables on relevant topics.
  • Coordinates consultations, seminars, or other meetings and sessions by state and nationally recognized experts in relevant fields of interest.
  • Serves as a presenter for customized local court trainings or to professional groups as needed.
  • Participates in regional or national associations and trainings as identified by the section manager and the Director of Court Services.
  • Develops and maintains a close working relationship with judges, local court staff, and justice system partners, as well as relevant national, state, and local agencies.
  • Ensures local courts are in compliance with the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio, relevant rules of practice and procedure, and statutory obligations as required by the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Encourages courts to develop collaborative efforts with agencies and community resources.
  • Facilitates roundtable meetings for judges and local court staff as needed; attends various related committees, subcommittees, and other public discussions as needed.
  • Maintains records for court programs to ensure information regarding the courts is accurate and complete as needed; maintains accurate records related to assigned projects.
  • Responds to constituent calls and suggests resources while maintaining ethical standards against giving legal advice.
  • Assists other staff in rule and standard drafting and contract review as needed.
  • Participates in evaluation efforts and other research on topic areas of relevant concern. Compiles and evaluates statistical data as needed to encourage evidence-based decision making. Develops spreadsheets and reports as needed.
  • Manages grants and other financial resources to ensure they are consistent with strategic plan; Pursues alternative funding sources for special projects as needed.
  • Coordinates work with other staff and programs to ensure collaboration and cooperation when appropriate; may provide direction to administrative support staff and/or externs as it relates to specific projects.
Requirements
  • Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and an active Ohio law license in good standing or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • At all times during employment with the Supreme Court, must be an attorney properly admitted to the practice of law in Ohio and be in good standing.
  • Must have at least three years experience in domestic relations, juvenile, probate, or related field. Experienced in multiple areas of family law or other public policy experience is preferred.
  • Requires four or more years of post-degree experience in a professional and administrative assignment.
  • An understanding of effective court management processes is preferred.
  • Requires the ability to problem solve and/or troubleshoot, think analytically, multitask effectively, and work independently. Requires judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information.
  • Requires a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; the Internet, and Westlaw or Lexis and other legal-research resources.
  • Travel is expected and required. Some overnight travel may be necessary. Requires the ability to work non-standard hours as needed.
  • A valid driver's license required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to establish positive public relations and to interact effectively with justices, judges, attorneys, supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • The ability to establish and maintain collaborative effective working relationships with supervisors and office staff, division directors and managers, public officials, and state agencies.
  • Problem solving skills, judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information.
  • Demonstrated customer service, organization, leadership, planning, and conflict management.
  • Must possess proven skills to demonstrate strong public speaking and sound grammar/writing abilities.
