Summary:

This role is responsible for performing pathology laboratory services to assist Pathologists in providing a diagnosis according to established standards and practices.

This position contributes to the organizational objectives by providing the best patient care through pathology testing and diagnosis.

Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing team member duties to ensure consistent use of Lean principles and processes and continuous process improvement.

Responsibilities:
  • Determine acceptability of specimens, perform laboratory tests in accordance with laboratory policy for assigned section or shift and / or obtain and record results for laboratory tests within established TAT as delegated by the Chief of Pathology.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, critical test results.
  • Prepare, embed, cut, stain and perform all processes involved in basic specialized pathology techniques with surgical pathology and autopsy related tissues.
  • Perform special staining techniques to accurately demonstrate the morphology of tissue specimens.
  • Perform frozen section of embedding, cutting and staining.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization stains as requested by the pathologist.
  • Initiate, perform, review and troubleshoot quality control of reagents and stains.
  • Maintain all clinical competencies required in section and perform in accordance with laboratory policy to provide accurate test performance of slides, blocks, stains, images and / or documents.
  • Operate and perform daily preventative maintenance of equipment according to written procedures and documents; report equipment malfunctions and request service as necessary.
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses or other requestors by telephone, computer or other method that ensure confidentiality.
  • Participate in instrument and test method validation and correlation studies.
  • Align daily work with individual, section, departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Understand and adhere to Lean principles and process such as standard work and maintaining 5S concept in work area realizing that all processes are driven by the needs of the customer.
Requirements:
  • At least 1 year previous histology related experience.
  • Experience may include clinical rotation training.
  • Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Meet education/training equivalency of CLIA High Complexity Testing personnel.
  • HT or HTL (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • If certification eligible, acquire certification within one year of hire date or certification eligibility date (whichever comes first).
