Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting diagnostic testing within various laboratory sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks essential for ensuring precise and prompt results, such as quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, the position involves clerical duties, general laboratory tasks, and phlebotomy as part of daily operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Specimen Collection and Management – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; gathers other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; communicates critical values in accordance with established policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory testing in areas such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following standard procedures.

• Quality Control – conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control processes in compliance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; monitors and reports Performance Improvement indicators.

• Preventative Maintenance – performs daily and periodic maintenance tasks with appropriate documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews and updates policy and procedure manuals; ensures reagents are dated and disposes of expired materials.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal growth and ongoing education.

• Training – assists in onboarding new staff and students in laboratory protocols.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous material usage protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency evaluations by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills


• An Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.

A) Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course lasting at least 50 weeks, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);

OR

B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses comprising six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;

AND

C) Laboratory training, which includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours mentioned above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

Experience


• No prior experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.

OR


• Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications


• New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
