Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting laboratory tests in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, this position involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks related to the daily operations of the laboratory. The technician also provides and dispenses blood products as required by medical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Upholds the company’s philosophy and core values in all customer interactions.

• Specimen Collection and Processing – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; performs tests within set timeframes; conducts laboratory testing in designated sections including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Quality Control – performs, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in accordance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; records performance improvement indicators and communicates results.

• Equipment Maintenance – conducts daily and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth through ongoing education.

• Training – assists in the training of new staff and students in laboratory procedures.

• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

Education and Skills:


• Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience that meets CLIA regulations.

A) Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course lasting at least 50 weeks, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);

OR

B) 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;

AND

C) Laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours mentioned above), or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

Experience:


• No prior experience is required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.

OR


• Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years (this meets AMT MLT eligibility requirements).

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:


• New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
