POSITION OVERVIEW:

Penn State University's Antennas and Electromagnetics Department at the Applied Research Laboratory is on the lookout for a seasoned Research and Development Engineer to oversee intricate RF Propagation initiatives, align with customer strategic goals, mentor team members, and cultivate relationships to secure funding from potential sponsors. The primary research focus encompasses RF Propagation across a spectrum from ELF to millimeter wave.

As part of your role, you will:
  • Oversee multiple large-scale RF Propagation and analytical projects.
  • Utilize established methodologies to spearhead the design, development, and execution of RF propagation models, incorporating environmental influences such as space weather and meteorological conditions. Additionally, lead teams in employing RF propagation models to assess the efficacy of engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Innovate new methodologies in RF propagation, including fresh mathematical derivations of electromagnetic phenomena and pertinent environmental factors.
  • Conduct RF propagation experiments and tests in both laboratory and field settings to validate or refine theoretical propositions based on research findings and insights from related technical fields; this includes measurement and observation recording, as well as data collection, compilation, and processing.
  • Document findings in technical reports, presentations, or oral/written formats.
  • Contribute significantly to assessing the feasibility of objectives; evaluate proposed or ongoing projects.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance RF propagation modeling and analytical capabilities, whether by extending existing methods, developing new techniques, or branching into new applications.
  • Provide innovative solutions to improve RF propagation modeling and analysis capabilities; leverage peer networks to broaden technical expertise and discover new research avenues.
  • Comprehend overarching strategic objectives and applications of RF propagation modeling and analysis, contributing to them; maintain and nurture relationships with key sponsors of external research and pursue grant funding.
  • Investigate and propose follow-on research projects or initiate new project concepts; develop technical proposals and present to customers or grant sponsors for funding.
  • Possibly chair sessions at technical meetings; present papers and/or participate in external seminars, workshops, professional societies, and committees.
  • Guide staff in developing technical, project management, and business development skills.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in an Engineering or Science discipline, along with 14+ years of relevant experience.

Essential skills encompass:
  • Expertise in RF Propagation mathematical methods, implementation of both new and established techniques, and application of these methods to resolve specific challenges.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a research team.
  • Proficiency in presenting to large groups of senior professionals, effectively conveying information to prompt action or decision-making.
  • Prior experience in developing technical proposals, writing whitepapers, etc.
  • Proficiency in various scientific programming languages, including Matlab, Python, C++, and FORTRAN; proven ability to interpret complex applied mathematics and numerical implementations.
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Current active security clearance.
  • Willingness to learn new programming languages and tools, mathematical techniques, and numerical implementations.
This position allows for a hybrid work model in the State College, PA area.

The compensation range for this position spans from $123,000 to $191,000.
