Position Overview
Under general supervision, this role involves performing a range of custodial tasks to ensure that designated rooms, buildings, and office spaces are maintained in a clean, organized, and orderly manner. This position also encompasses related responsibilities as necessary.

DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for executing various custodial duties to keep assigned areas clean, tidy, and orderly.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
Sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, and waxing floors; vacuuming carpets and rugs; dusting, polishing, and washing furniture and fixtures; emptying and sanitizing waste receptacles; cleaning restrooms and showers; washing windows and walls; maintaining blackboards; cleaning drinking fountains; polishing metal surfaces; rearranging furniture and equipment; setting up and closing classrooms and facilities for community events; replacing light bulbs and performing minor non-technical repairs to desks and equipment; cleaning blinds; reporting maintenance needs for buildings and equipment; checking and organizing received materials; maintaining custodial equipment; monitoring buildings during late shifts to deter vandalism, turning off lights and securing doors and windows; raising and lowering flags; opening buildings at the start of the workday; collecting litter and debris from grounds and surrounding areas; operating and maintaining power cleaning equipment; supervising student workers as needed; performing routine grounds maintenance; assisting in surface preparation for painting and conducting minor painting tasks as necessary for proper upkeep and cleanliness of walls and surfaces; and may involve driving motor vehicles.
REQUIREMENTS:
If required for the role, possession of a valid California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles is necessary; must maintain a driving record that meets the criteria for coverage under District vehicle insurance policies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:
- Cleaning methods and techniques for floors, walls, and fixtures;
- Cleaning agents, disinfectants, and equipment utilized in custodial work;
- Common tools and their applications;
- Safe working practices.
Skills:
- Ability to maintain assigned facilities in a clean and orderly state;
- Proficiency in using cleaning materials and equipment effectively;
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks;
- Skill in operating power cleaning equipment safely;
- Understanding and following work schedules along with oral and/or written instructions;
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and others encountered during work.
Experience:
- Any combination of training and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is acceptable.
One year of experience in custodial, janitorial, or related fields.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, twist at the waist, reach above and below the shoulders, perform neck movements, and execute repetitive arm and shoulder motions with moderate exertion.
- Occasional requirements for sitting, standing, squatting, and climbing.
- Ability to safely climb and utilize ladders.
- Capability to lift materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and carry them over distances of up to 20 feet.
- Occasionally push, pull, and maneuver loads exceeding 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate and manage demanding equipment such as floor polishers and carpet cleaning machines.
- Visual acuity and depth perception necessary for operating equipment and reading safety materials.
- Proficiency in hearing, speaking, writing, and reading in English to exchange information, complete work orders, and interpret directions and safety data sheets.
