Overview:

The Hospitalist Team at Cook Children's Health Care System is a dynamic group comprising approximately 30 Physicians and 12 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Together, we focus on the admission and management of pediatric patients presenting with diverse medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Admit patients from the emergency department and manage direct transfers.
  • Conduct comprehensive patient histories and develop tailored treatment plans.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests and address concerns from patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Engage in a structured 90-day onboarding process designed for new graduate APPs, ensuring a smooth transition into practice.
  • Participate in mentorship programs to enhance professional development.
  • Utilize a self-scheduling system, overseen by the APP Supervisor, to maintain flexibility in work hours.
  • Manage 2 to 4 night shifts weekly, based on full-time or part-time status.

Role of the NP/PA:

The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant collaborates closely with physicians in a hospital environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing patients and contributing to the care plan development.
  • Diagnosing and intervening based on established protocols.
  • Prescribing treatments to address patient needs, including decisions regarding hospital admission or discharge.
  • Collaborating with team members to refine care plans and optimize patient length of stay.

Qualifications:

For Advanced Practice Registered Nurses:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • At least 1 year of pediatric nursing experience or in a related specialized field is strongly preferred.

For Physician Assistants:

  • Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a related specialized area is strongly preferred.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:

For Advanced Practice Registered Nurses:

  • Valid Texas professional registered nurse license.
  • Current Texas professional advanced practice registered nurse license.
  • Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.

For Physician Assistants:

  • Valid Texas professional physician assistant license.
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C).
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
