Job Summary

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a skilled Nurse Practitioner to join our inpatient Palliative Care Program. As a Palliative Care specialist, you will provide pain and symptom management, psychosocial support, and advance care planning for patients and families facing serious illness.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct clinical care for patients according to established protocols and evidence-based practice standards in collaboration with the team.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records, documenting all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations in the electronic health record.
  • Identify yourself properly to patients and families, clarifying your role as a Nurse Practitioner if necessary.
  • Function within your scope and refer to the collaborating physician when outside of scope, or as directed by the collaborating physician or requested by the patient and/or family.
  • Perform interventions specific to your assigned patient population and collaborative agreement.
  • Participate in performance improvement processes to meet quality of care and service standards.
  • Demonstrate awareness of professional responsibility as a role model to peers and members of the healthcare team.
  • Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based on patients' clinical status.
  • Address patient and family concerns, creating a therapeutic relationship to provide support.
  • Provide patient education, counseling, and instruction regarding patient diagnosis, medical treatments, medications, and preventative care.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Precept NP students and other healthcare learners.
  • Identify patient/family needs for community resources and refer appropriately.
Credentials
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • ACLS (For providers in the acute care setting) required
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required
  • Certified Nurse PractitionerPA (Required)
  • PA and/or NJ CRNP licensure (CRNP) required
  • Prescriptive Authority (Required)
  • PA and/or NJ Prescriptive Authority required
  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
  • PA and/or NJ RN licensure (RN) required
Minimum Requirements
  • Master's prepared Nurse Practitioner with Acute Care certification
  • Current Pennsylvania license (or eligible to obtain)
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in the acute care setting is strongly preferred
  • Training/experience in palliative care, hospice, or geriatrics is preferred but not required
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills and the ability to work independently with a wide variety of medical and surgical services
