Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Juvenile Detention Officer. As a key member of our staff, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of youths in our 24-hour detention facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Makes critical and sound judgments and decisions during crisis or potentially dangerous situations.
  • Disciplines youths by enforcing facility rules, documents behavior, and forwards to appropriate personnel.
  • Serves as back-up to staff, assuming all duties as necessary, including administering medications, transporting youths, and processing intake assessments or discharges.
  • Conducts inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Transports youths to and from appointments and coordinates daily educational and entertaining programs and activities.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program.
  • Three (3) years of work-related experience or forty-five (45) hours from an accredited college or university in a job-related field of study or a combination of the two.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of hire and be certified as required by applicable standards for the facility/department assigned within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license, with a good driving record, and pass an extensive background investigation.
Working Conditions
  • Position requires working with juveniles who may have committed dangerous/aggressive acts; should possess a high tolerance for working in an emotionally demanding/stressful work environment.
  • May be required to work mandatory overtime or remain on duty and work all or part of an additional shift.
  • May be considered 'essential personnel' subject to being held over or called back to a work location or alternate site at all times.
  • Must pass all portions (physical/written) of the Juvenile Academy to continue employment or all standards related to PREA and Ethics for specific positions.
