Role Summary
The Educational Support Specialist II plays a vital role in managing and supervising students, addressing crises through intervention and conflict resolution, and implementing instructional and behavioral programs. This position also includes substituting for absent staff (if endorsed by the New Jersey Department of Education), planning extracurricular activities, and collecting data on student progress. The specialist is expected to embody the organization's Mission, Values, and Service Standards in all responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
A typical day for an Educational Support Specialist II at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Supervising students throughout the school day, including during arrival, departure, lunchtime, instructional periods, extracurricular activities, and field trips.
- Implementing crisis management strategies, which involve conflict resolution, supervising students during time-outs, and assisting with de-escalation efforts.
- Supporting teachers in preparing instructional materials and delivering lessons to individuals or groups under the teacher's guidance.
- Assisting in lesson planning, organizing class trips, and coordinating special projects.
- Helping classroom teachers manage student behavior and maintain a conducive learning environment.
- Contributing to the development and evaluation of behavioral intervention plans, including documenting behavioral observations and analyzing relevant data.
- Maintaining a point system for a school-wide behavioral initiative.
- Providing substitute coverage for absent teachers as needed, which may involve short-notice assignments in various settings.
- Collecting and maintaining data related to student behavior and academic performance, including daily ratings and documentation of incidents.
- Participating in scheduled staff meetings and fostering constructive relationships with colleagues.
- Building positive and appropriate relationships with students and seeking assistance for any student-related issues.
- Performing additional duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
- A minimum of one year of experience working with children in a group setting.
- Completion of NJDOE Criminal History Review.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Licenses and Certifications:
- NJDOE Substitute Teacher Certification, or to be obtained within 90 days of hire.
