This is a unique opportunity to work in the Legal Department of a publicly-traded diversified energy company. Job Responsibilities
  • Provide legal leadership and counsel on state regulatory proceedings and compliance filings, including drafting or review of filings and representing electric and gas utility companies in proceedings before state regulatory agencies in New York.
  • Lead, oversee and provide legal advice in rate cases for New York State Electric & Gas Corporation and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation.
  • Lead, oversee and provide legal advice in regulatory dockets, review compliance filings, draft protective orders, appear at hearing and technical conferences at state regulatory agencies in New York.
  • Advise senior managers within the Company on topics of concern to the electric and gas utility businesses.
  • Work alongside and become a trusted advisor to the business areas within the Company.
  • Assist outside counsel in the Company's defense of suits or claims and the preparation of the prosecution of the corporation's claims against others.
  • Prepare or review contracts, purchase agreements, leases, and other legal instruments to safeguard the Company's interests.
  • Perform research and prepare and draft necessary legal documents and correspondence; Monitor relevant regulatory proceedings.
  • Analyze and organize documentary evidence and develop conclusions and make recommendations to business areas.
  • Gather information for annual reporting on sustainability, litigation, penalties, regulatory dockets, etc.
  • Support the New York State Electric & Gas Corporation and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation General Counsel and other members of the legal team.
Requirements
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing to all levels of the organization.
  • Strong negotiating skills with both legal and commercial issues.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and under deadlines.
  • Ability to research key legal issues for the Companies and convey results in an effective, understandable manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization's legal and regulatory departments, across all businesses, and with regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to mentor other attorneys in the department and develop best practices for the utility regulatory work.
Experience/Training
  • Experience as an attorney with a law firm, regulatory agency or in-house position preferred with at least 5 years of practical legal experience as gas and/or electric regulatory counsel, preferably with experience in New York state regulatory matters.
  • Bar Admission/Certifications: Admitted to practice in New York or able to waive in, or otherwise gain admission to the Bar of New York.
  • Required Education: J.D. Degree.
