Job Summary

The Crime Victim Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced attorney to join our team as an Assistant Attorney General III. This position will oversee the appeals process, open records process, and subrogation in the Crime Victims' Compensation Program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in victim services law and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs, plans, coordinates, and monitors the appeals section of the Crime Victim Services Division.
  • Oversees administrative law hearings, appeals reviews of compensation claims, and investigations of alleged fraud committed against the victims of crime fund.
  • Assists with drafting, monitoring, analyzing, and advising in establishment of Crime Victims' Compensation administrative rules, policies, and procedures, and legal documents.
  • Assists with drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration and providing analysis of proposed law and potential fiscal costs.
  • Oversees enforcement of applications involving Crime Victims' Compensation subrogation rights.
  • Oversees CVSD compliance with the Public Information Act.
  • Assists in preparation of pre- and post-trial documents and provides legal advice and assistance in lawsuits arising from dissatisfaction of compensation claim decisions.

Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.).
  • Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas.
  • Must be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas and eligible to practice law in Texas by start date.
  • Two years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney working victim services law.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal principles, and practices relevant to victim issues matters.
  • Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making.
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA.
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney working victim services law.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws related to purchasing, contracting, and grant and management standards.
  • Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak in Spanish.
