Role Summary

The Fire Safety Compliance Officer plays a crucial role in overseeing fire code enforcement activities within the Emergency Management department. This position is responsible for advocating fire safety, ensuring adherence to fire code regulations, and conducting plan reviews to confirm compliance. The officer will engage in routine law enforcement tasks, identify necessary corrective measures, respond to inquiries, and maintain accurate documentation.


Key Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are typical for this role. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar or related:


  1. Conduct fire inspections to verify compliance with fire code regulations.
  2. Perform fire investigations to ascertain the origin and cause of incidents.
  3. Support law enforcement and fire departments in search and rescue operations.
  4. Assist various agencies in Cameron County to fulfill their operational needs.
  5. Utilize drone technology for aerial searches in areas with limited access.
  6. Conduct plan reviews to ensure fire code compliance.
  7. Collaborate with Emergency Management on hurricane preparedness initiatives to educate the community.
  8. Participate in disaster evaluations to assess financial impacts.
  9. Promote fire safety awareness among the public in residential and workplace settings.
  10. Attend monthly meetings to report on departmental activities.
  11. Provide guidance and information to employees, managers, vendors, and citizens regarding fire prevention and enforcement.
  12. Act as a liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments concerning fire code matters.

Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as necessary.


Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED is required, along with six (6) years of experience in fire code enforcement or arson investigation. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position will also be considered. Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) as a Fire/Arson Investigator is mandatory. Fire Inspector certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire, and Plans Examiner certification is preferred. Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is required within one (1) year of hire.


Physical and Sensory Requirements

Tasks necessitate the ability to exert moderate physical effort, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy objects. Duties may require extended periods of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and other physical activities.


Some tasks require the ability to perceive sounds and visual signals, as well as effective oral communication.


Environmental Conditions

Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including damp surfaces and various fumes.
