Basic Requirements:

Additional Requirement: Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in orthopedic surgery

Preferred Experience: Recent experience in total joint surgical cases within the last year. Familiarity with hand, wrist, and elbow surgical procedures.

Physical Requirements:
Applicants must meet specific physical standards for the role. A physical examination prior to placement is mandatory. This position is subject to drug testing. Responsibilities include lifting 15-44 pounds, pushing for approximately 2 hours, reaching above shoulder level, and utilizing both hands. The role involves walking and standing for 3-5 hours and kneeling. Candidates must demonstrate rapid mental and muscular coordination, possess depth perception, and be able to distinguish basic colors and shades. Hearing aids are permitted.

Role Overview:
The Orthopedic Surgeon specializes in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions to achieve effective management or resolution of orthopedic issues. The incumbent will independently perform surgical procedures and manage outpatient responsibilities, including sharing orthopedic call duties. They will also support the professional growth of staff within the service, adhering to all operational workflows, protocols, and policies.

Quality Improvement Participation:
The Orthopedic Surgeon will engage in quality enhancement initiatives, including performance measure meetings, staff discussions, and peer review processes. Responsibilities include screening both outpatients and inpatients to assess the necessity for further care, conducting initial histories and physical examinations, and performing both major and minor surgical interventions.

Clinical Responsibilities:
The Orthopedic Surgeon will prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests such as lab work and imaging, and initiate specialty consultations as required. Collaboration is key, as the Surgery Department operates as a cohesive team with the entire medical center staff. The Orthopedic Surgeon will supervise clinical staff, including mid-level providers and nursing personnel, in various situations.

Customer Service Focus:
This role emphasizes delivering surgical services to Veterans, who typically range from 18 to 70 years of age. The incumbent must understand and address the unique needs of this patient demographic, ensuring sensitivity to age-related, developmental, and cultural factors.
