Physical Requirements:
Applicants must fulfill physical standards for the role. A physical examination prior to placement is mandatory. This position is subject to drug testing. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing for approximately 2 hours; reaching above shoulder level; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing for 3-5 hours; and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously is essential. Must possess depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades. Hearing aids are permitted.
Role Overview:
The Orthopedic Surgeon is a specialized professional responsible for diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions to achieve relief or resolution of orthopedic issues. The incumbent will independently perform surgical procedures and manage outpatient workloads, including orthopedic call requirements. They will support the professional development of personnel within the service and adhere to all established workflows, procedures, protocols, and policies.
Quality Improvement Participation:
Engagement in quality improvement initiatives is expected, including performance measure meetings, staff meetings, and peer review processes. The Orthopedic Surgeon will evaluate both outpatients and inpatients to determine the necessity for further care, conducting initial histories and physical examinations, as well as performing both major and minor surgical procedures.
Responsibilities:
The Orthopedic Surgeon will prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests such as lab studies and imaging, and enter specialty consults as required. Each member of the Surgery Department collaborates as a cohesive team with the entire medical center staff. The Orthopedic Surgeon will supervise clinical staff, including mid-level providers and nursing personnel, in various situations.
Customer Focus:
This position emphasizes the delivery of surgical services to Veterans enrolled at the VA Central California Health Care System. Understanding the unique needs of this patient demographic, which typically ranges from 18 to 70 years of age, is crucial. Sensitivity to the specific requirements of all patients, considering age, developmental needs, and cultural factors, must be consistently demonstrated.
