Physical Requirements:
Applicants must meet the physical standards necessary for the role. A physical examination prior to placement is mandatory. This position is subject to drug testing. Requires the ability to lift 15-44 pounds; push for approximately 2 hours; reach above shoulder height; utilize fingers and both hands; walk and stand for 3-5 hours; and kneel. Must possess rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades are essential. Hearing aids are permitted.

Role Overview:
The Orthopedic Surgeon is a specialized professional dedicated to diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions to achieve effective palliation or resolution of orthopedic issues. The incumbent will independently conduct surgical procedures and manage outpatient workloads while participating in orthopedic call requirements. They will also promote the professional development of personnel within the service, adhering to all operational processes, protocols, and policies.

The Orthopedic Surgeon will engage in quality improvement initiatives, including performance measure meetings, staff discussions, morbidity and mortality conferences, and peer reviews. Responsibilities include screening both outpatients and inpatients to assess the need for further care, conducting initial histories and physical examinations, and performing both major and minor surgical interventions. Additionally, the surgeon will prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests such as laboratory analyses, imaging studies, and electrocardiograms (EKGs), and enter specialty consults as necessary.

Each member of the Surgery Department is expected to function as a collaborative and collegial team member with the entire medical center staff. The Orthopedic Surgeon will provide direct supervision to clinical staff, including mid-level providers, RNs, LVNs, and other trainees. However, this position does not entail supervisory responsibilities such as disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, or time and leave approvals.

The focus of this role is to deliver surgical services to Veterans enrolled at the VA Central California Health Care System. Understanding the unique needs of these patients, who typically range from 18 to 70 years of age, is essential. Sensitivity to the special requirements of all patients concerning age, developmental needs, and cultural factors must be consistently demonstrated.
