Position Summary:

The Motor Carrier Services (MCS) Enforcement Officers play a vital role in overseeing the commercial and agricultural motor carrier sector, both domestically and internationally. These officers are tasked with the enforcement of various commercial motor carrier regulations at designated locations throughout the state. Operating in both urban and rural settings, MCS Enforcement Officers possess the authority to make independent decisions on a variety of regulatory and enforcement matters. This includes ensuring compliance with vehicle size and weight regulations, licensing requirements, motor fuel tax obligations, and safety standards for vehicles, operators, and loads. The primary focus of MCS Enforcement is to safeguard public safety and maintain the integrity of the state's infrastructure.

Training Requirements:
Newly appointed MCS Officers will undergo extensive training, which may involve travel. The Department provides necessary accommodations, meals, and transportation during training. The starting pay for new officers is competitive.

• 14 Phase Field Training – Introduction to MCS and its law enforcement functions.

• Basic Law Enforcement Officer Training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy – 12 Weeks. All expenses, including meals and lodging, are covered.

• Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Inspector Training:
* Part A – 1 Week, focusing on Commercial Driver Inspection
* Part B – 1 Week, focusing on Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection
* General Hazardous Materials Training – 1 Week
* Hazardous Materials, Bulk Packages – 1 Week
* Hazardous Materials, Other Bulk Packages – 1 Week

Completion of the initial training may take between 1 to 1.5 years, after which officers can advance to the next level of the MCS Career Ladder and receive pay increases.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• High School Diploma is required.

• A valid driver's license is necessary.

• Candidates must be residents of Montana at the time of appointment.

• Lateral candidates must possess a current Law Enforcement Officer Basic certificate from Montana or another state issued within the last five years.

• Felony convictions that could lead to imprisonment in a federal or state facility will disqualify applicants.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

• Must demonstrate good moral character and maintain physical and mental fitness.

• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.

• Adherence to the public safety officers' code of ethics is required.

• Reliability and dependability in job performance are crucial.

Entry-level candidates are those who have not completed the MLEA Basic Law Enforcement Officer Course or lack law enforcement experience.

Lateral candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

• Graduated from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy within the last five years OR

• Hold a current Basic Law Enforcement POST Certificate from Montana or another state and have recent full-time sworn peace officer experience.

Testing Process:
Entry-level candidates must successfully complete the following assessments:

• National Police Officer Selection Test.

• Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT).

Selection Procedure:

• Oral Interview – Candidates will undergo a structured behavioral interview.

• Comprehensive Background Check

• Criminal history checks, including fingerprinting.

• Drug and Alcohol screening

• Psychological and physical evaluations.
