Position Summary:
This role is responsible for conducting inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties within the jurisdiction to ensure adherence to building regulations. The inspections are performed during various stages of construction, renovation, or repair to verify that plans, workmanship, and materials meet all necessary code requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of new and existing structures throughout the construction process to ensure compliance with local codes and state regulations.
  • Review plans and permit applications to confirm alignment with building codes and standards.
  • Address service requests related to code violations and ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken.
  • Collaborate with contractors to rectify any compliance issues identified during inspections.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed inspection reports documenting findings and actions taken.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding construction practices and land use, engaging with property owners and contractors as necessary.
  • Document any code violations and issue citations when required to enforce compliance.
  • Issue stop work orders when necessary to halt non-compliant activities.
  • Gather and prepare evidence for legal proceedings related to non-compliance cases.
  • Provide testimony in court as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of safety protocols and apply them during inspections and daily tasks.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to property owners, managers, tenants, and the general public.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments within the municipality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in plumbing, construction, or related code enforcement fields.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant codes, including plumbing, building, accessibility, and energy regulations.
  • Understanding of construction techniques, methods, and materials, with a focus on plumbing and structural work.
  • Familiarity with nuisance codes and state laws applicable to building practices.
  • Basic math and computer skills are essential.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Experience in reading blueprints and construction documents.
  • Ability to identify hazardous conditions and recommend corrective measures.
  • Proficient in maintaining accurate records and providing effective testimony in legal contexts.
  • Capable of interpreting and explaining laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and managing difficult conversations.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Technical or college-level coursework in plumbing, construction, electrical, or structural engineering is preferred.
  • Possession of at least three ICC certifications in relevant areas is required or must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
  • Licensure as a plumber in the state is preferred, along with the ability to achieve certification as a State of Illinois Certified Plumbing Inspector within 24 months of employment.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this position require the ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to operate tools, and reach with arms. The role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds and requires good vision and hearing capabilities.

Work Environment:
This position primarily involves outdoor work, requiring the ability to withstand various weather conditions while performing inspections.
