Under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor, the Structural Ironworker Leadman performs skilled manual work in connection with the assembly, erection, repair, or alteration of structural steel work. This role involves directing and checking the work of assigned journeymen and helpers, ensuring the completion of tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities- Supervises and directs the work of assigned Structural Ironworkers, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
- Participates in planning and coordinating the work of assigned Structural Ironworkers, including the fabrication, erection, and repair of structural steel components.
- Checks work progress, provides instructions, and conducts training sessions on job duties and safety practices.
- Erects steel columns, beams, girders, trusses, and other structural steel members on bridges, buildings, and other structures.
- Operates machinery necessary for the fabrication process of structural steel parts, including drilling, reaming, bolting, fitting, and laying out structural steel according to plans, specifications, or other instructions.
- Welds or cuts a variety of steel using gas or electric processes, power saws, or other means.
- Rigs or erects equipment and machinery for handling structural members.
- Requisitions tools, equipment, supplies, and/or materials from the storeroom.
- Conducts work in a safe manner, adhering to established safety rules and practices.
- Erects and dismantles portable scaffolding and rigging required in the work.
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
- Two years of experience as a journeyman structural ironworker or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
- Ability to work from sketches, plans, and specifications.
- Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.
