Job Summary

The Ironworker Foreman is responsible for overseeing all ironwork activities involved in the assembly, erection, repair, or alteration of structural steel and architectural metal work throughout the District.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise ironworker activities, plan and schedule projects, and provide guidance and instructions to ensure work is completed efficiently and safely.
  • Coordinate with other supervisory personnel to ensure ironworker activities align with other operating and maintenance work.
  • Ensure the proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in connection with the ironworker trades.
  • Monitor adherence to safety rules and practices, administer first aid as needed, and secure prompt medical attention when necessary.
  • Study and interpret blueprints, sketches, written or verbal orders, and requisition necessary tools, equipment, supplies, and materials.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent and three years of experience as a Structural or Architectural Ironworker.
  • Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.

Working Conditions

The Ironworker Foreman may be exposed to operating mechanical equipment, loud noise, and/or noxious odors. They may work in various weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of architectural and structural ironworking.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work from sketches, plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of several crews at different locations.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
