Position Summary:

The role involves the design and execution of civil engineering projects, particularly in the transportation sector. Collaborating closely with the Project Manager, responsibilities include defining project scope, ensuring client satisfaction, assisting in contract pricing, delivering engineering services, maintaining project quality, managing resources, and achieving project timelines and profitability targets. The position may also entail serving as the Engineer of Record for project documentation.

Responsibilities

Key Functions & Duties:

  • Develop comprehensive plans and specifications for municipal and state transportation initiatives.
  • Focus on the design of roadways, drainage systems, and traffic signal installations.
  • Conduct traffic analyses and studies as required.
  • Assist in preparing proposals and developing fee structures.
  • Utilize software tools such as OpenRoads, Geopak, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D for roadway design and analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports and conduct conceptual design evaluations.
  • Collaborate as part of a professional team led by a Project Manager.
  • Provide technical support to project managers in proposal preparation and client presentations.
  • Work with project managers on planning, providing technical guidance on project scope, strategies, task organization, effort estimates, fee structures, risk management, and necessary resources.
  • Oversee the production of project deliverables, including signing and sealing work products as a Registered Professional Engineer. Engage in various activities such as:
    • Conducting preliminary studies, planning, and cost estimation.
    • Managing the design process and production of plans.
    • Leading project status meetings and reviews.
    • Developing specifications and contract documents.
    • Overseeing bidding and contract awards.
    • Administering contracts and ensuring quality throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Performing site investigations and documenting existing conditions.
    • Assisting project managers with project accounting, including reviewing time and expense reports.
    • Staying updated on engineering trends and participating in relevant professional organizations.
    • Analyzing project issues to recommend efficient and cost-effective solutions.
    • Engaging with equipment vendors on a technical basis.
    • Selecting appropriate materials and equipment based on performance, cost, and maintenance considerations.
    • Managing engineering tasks and collaborating with other disciplines as necessary.
    • Handling multiple projects for various clients simultaneously.
    • Visiting clients and project sites to support business development efforts.
    • Serving as a consultant for transportation projects during the construction phase.

  • Knowledge of highway design standards and DOT policies.
  • Familiarity with the Highway Capacity Manual, Roadside Design Guide, MUTCD, and AASHTO Standards.

  • Collaborative approach with negotiation skills.
  • Analytical and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • High degree of creativity and judgment in planning and problem resolution.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and engineering software.
  • Familiarity with stormwater design programs is preferred.
  • Initiative, responsibility, and flexibility in leadership roles.
  • Good time management skills to handle complex workloads.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Education:
A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field is required.

Experience:

4-8 years of relevant engineering experience is required, with a preference for candidates familiar with OpenRoads or AutoCAD. Professional licensure in the required states is expected to be obtained promptly.

Travel Expectations:

Occasional travel in-state and out-of-state may be necessary, typically involving visits to project sites, other office locations, or attendance at seminars. Minimum travel is estimated at 10% of the time, with some positions requiring more. Travel expectations will be communicated by management.
