Salary Range: $53,000 to $57,000
Position Summary
The Benefits Case Manager is responsible for evaluating initial and ongoing eligibility for public assistance programs within Lake County.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist individuals seeking financial, medical, and nutritional aid through the County, providing application assistance and conducting interviews.
- Evaluate client needs and refer them to suitable services and support systems available within the department or community.
- Guide clients in completing necessary documentation and verify eligibility criteria for benefits.
- Assess eligibility for various programs by interpreting relevant rules, regulations, and policies. Authorize the continuation, modification, or cessation of benefits as necessary.
- Engage daily with a computer system, ensuring accurate and complete data entry for eligibility determinations.
- Clarify and explain appeal rights and procedures to clients.
- Evaluate client needs and determine financial eligibility for initial applications and ongoing assessments.
- Identify the necessity for fund recovery and refer cases for fraud investigations; prepare documentation and represent the department in evidentiary meetings and state hearings.
- Learn and apply relevant rules and regulations, develop interviewing and communication skills, and utilize information systems to update or review client data.
Additional Responsibilities
- Act as a professional representative of the Lake County Department of Human Services.
- Participate in Emergency Service Function 6 (Mass Care and Mass Shelter) as required.

Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years of full-time administrative experience.
- Skills Required:
- Ability to apply basic mathematics and interpret regulations.
- Understand local office policies and procedures.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, advocacy groups, and community agencies.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Make objective decisions based on relevant information when determining eligibility.
- Provide excellent customer service in high-stress situations.
- Compile and input accurate information to determine eligibility and payment.
- Identify and correct errors in documentation.
- Equipment Used: Standard office equipment.
- Interactions: Engage with clients to gather information, determine eligibility, explain programs, and make referrals to other services.
- Supervision: Receive training and detailed instructions from a supervisor, with work closely reviewed for accuracy and completeness.
- Hazards: May encounter escalated clients.
- Bilingual candidates: Pay differential available.
- Work Environment: Expected to work in-office at least three days a week, with potential for a hybrid work arrangement as per departmental policy.
