POSITION SUMMARY: This role involves performing moderately complex custodial tasks within designated areas. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining the Department of Public Safety facilities, managing custodial equipment, and ordering supplies. The position may involve training others and operates under general supervision, allowing for moderate independence and initiative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Execute general cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and washing windows, light fixtures, and carpets.

2. Maintain restrooms, replenish supplies, and apply cleaning agents as necessary.

3. Clean office furniture, walls, and windows; manage waste disposal; and ensure thorough cleaning of office spaces.

4. Sanitize and disinfect areas including restrooms, offices, and other facilities.

5. Perform maintenance and care for carpets.

6. Clean drapes and upholstery, and repair venetian blinds and curtain rods as needed.

7. Assist in relocating furniture for cleaning, office reconfigurations, or special events.

8. Operate floor maintenance machinery, including buffers, strippers, vacuums, and extractors.

9. Conduct minor repairs on custodial equipment as required.

10. Maintain and restock custodial supply areas.

11. Perform limited outdoor maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming shrubs, edging, weeding, sweeping sidewalks, and managing trash in proximity to the building.

12. Attend work consistently and adhere to approved work hours in line with agency attendance policies.

13. Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School graduation or equivalent preferred.

Experience: A minimum of six (6) months of relevant work experience in custodial methods, materials, and equipment is preferred.

Licensure: A valid driver’s license from the state of residence is required.

Custodial Skills: Ability to effectively perform custodial tasks and operate modern cleaning equipment.

Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with TXDPS, state, and federal regulations, as well as cleaning techniques and inventory control principles.

Technical Skills: Competence in using standard office software for timecard input and email management, or willingness to learn.

Analytical Skills: Must be detail-oriented and capable of multitasking while maintaining accuracy.

Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal abilities are essential for maintaining effective professional relationships.

Organizational Skills: Must be organized and adaptable in a dynamic environment, with the ability to follow complex instructions.

Confidentiality: Must handle sensitive information responsibly.

Schedule: Availability for after-hours and weekend work is required for special projects.

The physical and environmental demands necessary for successful performance in this role include:
  • Work environment: Indoors and outdoors seasonally;
  • Mobility skills: standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling;
  • Ability to climb ladders;
  • Hand-eye coordination and dexterity;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;
  • Ability to lift weights up to fifty (50) pounds;
  • Occasional driving requirements.

Salary adjustments for DPS employees: Employees selected for positions within the same salary group and state title will transfer without a salary change.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and subject to budgetary restrictions.
