Job Summary

This is a seasonal position in the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, performing a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting staff in inspecting wetlands for mosquitoes and invasive plants, applying pesticides as needed, and performing maintenance and operation of vehicles and field equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in inspecting wetlands for mosquitoes and invasive plants
  • Apply pesticides to control as needed
  • Perform maintenance and operation of vehicles and field equipment
  • Assist in replacing and maintaining culverts and water control structures
  • Excavation and earth moving projects
  • Invasive plant control in salt marshes and inland wetlands for wetland habitat enhancement
  • Work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP-managed and private lands and facilities
  • Driving vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less
  • Towing small trailers (boats, landscape)
  • Performing basic clerical duties
Requirements
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver's license
  • Will be required to obtain a Connecticut Pesticide Junior Operator's license (training and exam provided without cost)
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of machinery and power equipment is preferred
  • Experience in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs, grounds maintenance, trailer towing, and boat handling is preferred
  • Experience operating construction equipment is preferred
  • CT boating certificate is preferred
  • Experience using computers and Microsoft Office in a work setting is preferred
Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
