Position Summary:

NIJC is in search of attorneys specializing in human rights and immigration law, welcoming applicants of all experience levels, including recent law graduates, to join our esteemed team. Attorneys at NIJC engage in significant impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and furthering the mission of NIJC. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, showcasing meticulous attention to detail, clear communication, and effective time management.

  • Immigrant Legal Defense (Spanish proficiency required) - This project provides a variety of legal services to low-income immigrants seeking lawful permanent residency, citizenship, visas, and protection from deportation.
  • Asylum Representation - NIJC offers free legal representation to individuals seeking asylum from persecution.
  • Children's Legal Services - Our legal team assists unaccompanied minors in exploring their immigration options.
  • LGBTQ Advocacy - We support individuals seeking safety from persecution based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Detention Advocacy - This project provides legal orientation and representation for immigrant adults detained by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Litigation Support - Collaborate on federal litigation cases and work with NIJC's communication, policy, and litigation teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and advocate for cases in line with professional standards.
  • Assess client needs and deliver comprehensive legal services.
  • Maintain expertise in immigration law and related policies.
  • Build relationships with relevant organizations and communities.
  • Uphold ethical standards, ensuring client confidentiality and conflict avoidance.
  • Keep accurate records and contribute to training and special projects.
  • Identify trends and propose advocacy strategies.
  • Participate in ongoing training and adhere to professional standards.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service abilities.
  • Meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in time management, analytical, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree is required.
  • A minimum of three years of legal practice, preferably in immigration or human rights law.
  • Fluency in Spanish (reading, speaking, and writing) is required.
  • Ability to interpret and respond to complex instructions.
