Position Summary:

NIJC is seeking human rights and immigration attorneys at all experience levels, including recent law graduates, to join our esteemed team. Attorneys at NIJC engage in impactful litigation, public policy advocacy, and furthering our mission. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage time efficiently while working both independently and collaboratively.

  • Immigrant Legal Defense (Spanish proficiency required) - This project offers a variety of legal services to low-income immigrants seeking lawful permanent residency, citizenship, visas, and protection from deportation.
  • Asylum Representation - NIJC provides free legal assistance to asylum seekers escaping persecution.
  • Children's Legal Services - Our legal team assists unaccompanied minors in exploring their immigration options.
  • LGBTQ Advocacy - Support for individuals seeking refuge from persecution based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Detention Advocacy - Legal orientation and representation for immigrant adults detained by immigration authorities.
  • Litigation Support - Collaborate on federal litigation cases and work with communication, policy, and litigation teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and advocate for cases in accordance with professional standards.
  • Assess client needs and deliver comprehensive legal services.
  • Maintain expertise in immigration law and related policies.
  • Build relationships with relevant organizations and communities.
  • Uphold ethical standards, ensuring client confidentiality and conflict avoidance.
  • Keep accurate records and contribute to training and special projects.
  • Identify trends and propose advocacy strategies.
  • Participate in ongoing training and adhere to professional standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree is required.
  • A minimum of three years of legal practice, preferably in immigration or human rights law.
  • Fluency in Spanish (reading, speaking, and writing) is required.
  • Ability to interpret and respond to complex instructions.
