Transportation Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Transportation Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our transportation team, you will be responsible for safely transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory passengers on short and long-distance trips using state-operated motor vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:- Operate state-operated motor vehicles such as Full-Size Van, Wheelchair Van, Paratransit/Small Bus, truck and/or car to transport passengers on and off-campus.
- Secure any cargo such as food and beverage coolers, clothing items, and/or medical supplies in accordance with instructions provided.
- Comply with best practices for vehicle operation and safety, including obeying posted maximum and minimum speed limits.
- Assist in the safe loading and unloading of passengers in accordance with their individual care plans and facility rules and regulations.
- Ensure ambulatory passengers use safety restraints and operate vehicle power lifts to safely load and unload wheelchairs of various sizes and configurations.
- Maintain vehicles at optimal condition, conduct safety checks, and perform basic vehicle maintenance as needed.
- Prepare and maintain records and logs related to vehicle operations, including documenting any vehicle problems and reporting the need for minor vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Provide guidance and on-the-job training to other drivers in accordance with experience and competency.
- Working knowledge of methods used in transporting individuals.
- Knowledge and understanding of motor vehicle operations and traffic safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of passenger loading and unloading procedures and protocols.
- Knowledge of the maintenance of motor vehicles.
- Ability to communicate with others in a cooperative and positive manner.
- Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles.
- Ability to understand and comply with written and oral instructions.
- Ability to do simple mathematical calculations.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of long periods of sitting/driving, standing, and to carry, push, pull and lift up to fifty pounds.
- Ability to tell time and work on a schedule.
- Ability to tolerate cold and hot weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and sign the "New/Existing Employee – Driver Qualification Statement" regarding driving eligibility.
- Ability to complete and pass the appropriate Van Driver Training courses for the type(s) of vehicle being operated.
This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The successful candidate will be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
