POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of the interpreter services manager, the individual in this role acts as a medical interpreter for patients and healthcare staff, facilitating effective communication in consecutive, simultaneous, or sight translation modes for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP), as well as those who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This position is responsible for conveying medical information between speakers of different languages while adhering to all relevant office and hospital policies, particularly those concerning patient confidentiality and informed consent. The incumbent will demonstrate proficiency in the competencies outlined in the IMIA Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Facilitates communication of medical information across three modalities: in-person, telephonic, and video interpreting. Mitigates language barriers for patients and families who are LEP, Deaf, or hard of hearing seeking medical care. Assists in the effective delivery of services to a diverse patient population. Provides explanations of hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to both clinicians and patients; makes appropriate referrals; and serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to enhance patient-provider interactions. Engages in teamwork and collaboration, adhering to hospital policies regarding customer relations and service excellence. Understands the hospital's service delivery model. Aids in office operations by managing phone inquiries, processing requests, confirming patient appointments, documenting interactions in the interpreter tracking system and electronic medical records, performing data entry, scheduling future appointments as needed, and assisting with equipment troubleshooting and administrative tasks. Utilizes various online systems, including email and hospital software, and participates in special projects as assigned. Supports financial counseling efforts and community outreach initiatives as directed by the Interpreter Manager. Assists in the review of brief translations as instructed by the manager. Aids in the maintenance and monitoring of interpreting and disability equipment. Acts as a resource for staff regarding patients with disabilities. Provides support across all campuses and off-site locations as required. Performs additional duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Proficient Linguistic Abilities:

Demonstrates understanding of various regional accents and linguistic styles. Selects the most suitable interpretation mode for each situation. Interprets with a high degree of accuracy and thoroughness in consecutive and sight translation modes. Self-corrects, recognizes personal linguistic limitations, seeks clarification, and welcomes constructive feedback. Attunes to cues from participants regarding their level of understanding and need for clarification. Possesses strong writing skills in both English and target language(s). Recognizes language as a cultural expression and understands the underlying assumptions of each party regarding healthcare, the encounter, and the illness. Empowers patients and providers to enhance mutual understanding. Acts as an intercultural mediator when communication is hindered by cultural nuances. Avoids stereotypes and generalizations, employing culturally appropriate behavior and knowing when to clarify or interject while respecting the goals of the interaction. Acknowledges personal values, beliefs, and cultural traits that may cause conflict or discomfort, and is able to withdraw from situations when necessary to ensure effective interpretation.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages, both spoken and written. Ability to perform consecutive interpretation and sight translation accurately. High level of customer service orientation and a positive demeanor. Familiarity with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. General understanding of the cultural backgrounds of the patient population served. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills. Proficient in using computer systems.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of medical interpreter training, with a minimum of 40 hours. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
