About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke is seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Technician II to join our Public Works team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and equipment, as well as operating motorized equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate tractor-trailer or other heavy construction equipment
  • Operate street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane, and chipper
  • Service and make minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
  • Inspect equipment for proper safety and ensure that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment
  • Perform major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems
  • Repair catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks
  • Perform work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings
  • Perform some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work
  • Assist with special events, snow removal, and other emergency tasks

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
