Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of pre-analytic workflow to ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens are collected and processed appropriately, and are correctly transported.
  • Verify orders where necessary and handle unresolved orders, troubleshoot as needed.
  • Verify non-patient information according to established protocol and recognize when fraud and abuse compliance issues require adjustments to the test order.
  • Collect, receive, and process specimens, verifying they are correctly and completely labeled upon receipt.
  • Evaluate specimens for appropriateness and take necessary corrective action, documenting unacceptable specimens.
  • Prioritize specimen processing based on established priorities and aliquot specimens according to established protocols.
  • Perform all aspects of analytical testing, maintaining test system integrity, and performing preventative maintenance on instruments/equipment in a timely fashion.
  • Verify reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria upon receipt and prior to use, taking action to ensure unacceptable items are removed from use.
  • Ensure sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available, notifying senior staff when minimum inventory levels are encountered.
  • Perform and record all necessary quality control required for test system performance, evaluating QC results and taking necessary corrective actions according to established protocol.
  • Perform specimen preparation, prioritizing testing based on assignment or established priorities, completing testing within defined turn-around-times.
  • Perform technical review and interpretation, reviewing results for completeness, correctness, and consistency within defined test system.
  • Evaluate test results/reactions and provide accurate interpretations as appropriate, recognizing unusual test results/interpretations and completing indicated reflex testing or other follow-up actions.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems, recognizing test system performance problems and taking necessary corrective actions.
  • Post-test specimen storage, storing specimens and related materials according to protocols for location and duration, retrieving specimen and related materials when needed.
  • Verify and report results, verifying results according to procedure, performing computer functions necessary for releasing results, and generating written reports according to established protocol.
  • Amend reports, correcting erroneous reports and amending reports according to procedure.
  • Respond to inquiries, responding to requests for information according to established protocol for confidentiality and release of information.
  • Store documents and records, storing documents and records according to established protocol.
  • Charge capture/billing, performing billing and/or entering credits for tests and services when applicable.
  • Ensure quality of operations, following written standard operating procedures, operating instruments/equipment according to protocol, and using computers according to established protocol.
  • Ensure safety of operations, following all required safety procedures, using personal protective equipment appropriate for tasks performed, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Provide service excellence, answering telephones when needed, using Northwestern Medicine telephone etiquette, maintaining patient confidentiality, and assisting patients and other contacts whenever needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or chemical, physical, or biological science to qualify the individual as Testing Personnel under the CLIA 88 regulations.
  • CLSp(MB) certified through the National Certification Agency or MP(ASCP) certified through ASCP.
