Position Overview

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago is on the lookout for a Head of Institutional Fundraising, a crucial leadership role within the Development department. This position is responsible for spearheading a dynamic team and overseeing all fundraising efforts from institutional sources, including foundations, corporations, and competitive government grants. The selected candidate will be tasked with formulating and executing the comprehensive strategy, implementation, and performance metrics associated with institutional fundraising.

This role is essential for positioning the organization for sustainable growth by establishing a robust pipeline of funders and supporters. The individual will report directly to the Chief Development Officer and collaborate closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors to enhance relationships and engage in donor cultivation and development.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Develop and implement the overarching strategy to achieve current and future fundraising objectives related to formal foundations, corporate institutions, and competitive government grants.
  • Ensure the successful achievement of annual fundraising targets for the team, including personal contributions and those of direct reports.
  • Manage a portfolio of institutional donors and prospects effectively.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from prospective donors within the assigned portfolio.
  • Assist in identifying new potential donors for the annual fund to maintain a healthy pipeline of prospective contributors at all stages of engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and other volunteer leadership groups to optimize and manage donor relationships.
  • Support the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Development Officer in outreach and fundraising initiatives.
  • Draft and customize letters of request, donor proposals, and other communications for the donor portfolio.
  • Foster a culture of robust donor stewardship, emphasizing gratitude.
  • Lead and manage events and tools aimed at engaging, cultivating, and stewarding institutional donors and prospects.
  • Review and approve proposals and reports prepared by direct reports or contracted writers.
  • Create proposals and reports as necessary.

Operations

  • Work alongside Development Operations team members to ensure the accuracy of grant agreements, donor management functions, awards, and compliance details entered into the donor CRM database and other relevant systems.

Management

  • Oversee direct reports and contractors, providing ongoing support, encouragement, and constructive feedback regarding progress toward established performance goals.
  • Ensure the Institutional Giving team delivers high levels of client satisfaction within Development through excellent stewardship.
  • Partner with the Development Operations team to monitor activity metrics for the giving dashboard and provide monthly assessments of progress toward the team's Institutional Giving portfolio goals.

Leadership

  • Build and maintain strong interdepartmental relationships.
  • Participate as a member of the senior development team.
  • Engage in cross-departmental team building and organizational leadership initiatives.
  • Represent the organization at external events.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned within a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Over ten years of experience in institutional fundraising, demonstrating a strong track record of success in direct fundraising.
  • Exceptional writing and editing abilities.
  • Proven capability to meet fundraising or sales objectives.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a professional context.
  • A criminal background check and verification of employment and degrees will be conducted.
