Job Summary

As a Firefighter and Rescue Specialist at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, you will be responsible for providing emergency medical response as a first responder. You will respond to all fires for fire suppression, hazardous material spills, and rescues as a member of a fire company. Your duties will include laying hose, carrying and setting up ladders, and using fire equipment to extinguish fires and make rescues. You will also administer first aid, participate in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections, and participate in drills and training activities. Additionally, you will operate department emergency and non-emergency apparatus and perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to fire and emergency calls as a member of a fire company
• Lay hose, carry and set up ladders, and use fire equipment to extinguish fires and make rescues
• Administer first aid
• Participate in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections
• Participate in drills and training activities
• Operate department emergency and non-emergency apparatus

Requirements

• Basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered
• Successful completion of CSFM Firefighter 1
• Current CPAT or Biddle certification
• Medical treatment up to par with San Diego protocol
• Capable in most aspects of emergency care, firefighting, and rescues
• Techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards
• Working with hazardous materials and able to successfully contain and clean and mitigate disposal methods
• Safe operation of tools and machinery
• Use of computer software programs (MS Office, iOS applications)

Working Conditions

This role requires working in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments. The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering

Accountability

Ensures NASSCO's Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO's Fire Management System.

Pay Scale: $53,300 - $73,700

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
