We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Staff Veterinarian to join our team at the Arizona Humane Society. As a key member of our veterinary team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality medical care to animals in need.
Key Responsibilities:- Oversee the treatment of animals in our care, including those in distress, and provide accurate care instructions to our team of clinic technicians.
- Evaluate owned animals brought in for appointments, perform physical exams, diagnostics, and determine appropriate disposition for animals in Admissions.
- Provide clear instructions and guidance to clients to ensure they are set up for success in caring for their pets.
- Perform, train on, and oversee spay/neuter and other surgeries.
- Formulate, oversee, present, implement, review, and update a humane euthanasia program.
- Maintain all medical records and monitor, dispense, and log controlled substances according to standards established by the DEA.
- Be a mentor by formulating and teaching medical classes for staff, volunteers, and other agencies.
- Assist other departments in situations involving animal welfare, such as testifying in court, appearing in media releases, and providing necessary documentation.
- Be available for on-call status for emergency situations and respond quickly.
- Advise the Lead Veterinarian on clinic activities and recommend possible changes to upgrade services.
- Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (V.M.D.) degree.
- Licensed to practice in Arizona.
- One year of experience in a veterinary practice with emphasis on surgery skills.
- Above-average surgery skills and a humane attitude towards animals and people.
- Orthopedic surgery experience is a plus.
- Ability to evaluate health status in an objective manner and determine the most appropriate disposition for an animal.
- Good communication skills.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air-conditioned and heated environment.
