Overview of the Role


Position Summary:

MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated Respiratory Care Practitioner to enhance our services at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The successful candidate will be a certified respiratory therapist committed to delivering exceptional patient care, demonstrating extensive knowledge in respiratory therapy. Care is provided based on physician orders and established protocols.

As a Respiratory Care Practitioner, you will have a solid understanding of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and the pathologies associated with respiratory care. Proficiency in operating respiratory care equipment and applying it effectively in clinical environments is essential. You will also need to identify hazardous conditions related to respiratory care and take appropriate corrective measures. Your role will involve working with a diverse patient population, from neonates to geriatrics, while maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. Strong teamwork and communication skills are vital for success in this position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects of patients, documenting educational needs accurately. Refer to competency validation documents as necessary for the populations served.
  • Administer all respiratory therapy treatments and services, including but not limited to: application, operation, monitoring, and management of equipment and services provided. This includes oxygen therapy, mixed gas administration, humidity control, ventilator management (both invasive and non-invasive), bronchial hygiene, lung expansion techniques, spirometry testing, EKG monitoring, and blood gas analysis.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication principles, effective interviewing techniques, problem-solving skills, and crisis intervention strategies in patient care.
  • Engage in cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, maintaining airways and providing oxygen and ventilation through various devices, as well as performing closed chest cardiac massage.
  • Enhance workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems and processes, adhering to departmental policies, and recommending improvements as necessary. Review electronic medical records and physician orders throughout your shift.
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree from an AMA accredited respiratory care program with an AAS Degree or higher.
  • Certification as a Respiratory Therapist (CRT) - NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist or NBRC Registered Pulmonary Function Technician from an accredited program is mandatory.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required within one year of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification must be acquired within one year of hire.
  • Registry eligibility is required; some acute experience is preferred.
  • Preferred education includes a Bachelor's degree in a related healthcare field.
  • Preferred certification: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
