Department Overview
The Computer Engineering Department at San Jose State University (SJSU) is dedicated to equipping local and national technology firms with highly skilled, practice-oriented graduates in computer disciplines. We offer undergraduate programs in computer engineering and software engineering, alongside master's programs in computer engineering, software engineering, and artificial intelligence. Our curriculum encompasses a wide array of subjects, including computer hardware design, embedded systems, software development, real-time systems, virtual systems, enterprise software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and data mining. The department caters to over 1800 undergraduate and graduate students, fostering close collaborative relationships with industry and research partners in Silicon Valley.
Key Responsibilities
- Instructors are expected to deliver their courses with effectiveness, collaborate with the department Assessment Coordinator to evaluate course and program learning outcomes, maintain appropriate office hours in line with University Policy, and engage in the peer-review process within the department. Instructors are encouraged to seek clarification from the Department Chair regarding University policies and departmental practices related to grading, assessments, textbooks, office hours, course evaluations, learning objectives, accessibility accommodations, and academic integrity.
- Demonstrate an understanding of and address the diverse needs of a student body that includes a variety of ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations through inclusive course materials, teaching methods, and advisement.
- All faculty members are required to organize their courses within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Classes must be conducted as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the course schedule.
Qualifications Required
- The minimum qualifications and experience required differ by rank, as follows:
- L-A: Master’s degree in computer or software engineering or a closely related field with at least two years of professional experience.
- L-B: Master’s degree in computer or software engineering or a closely related field with a minimum of seven years of professional experience, including teaching; or a Ph.D. in computer or software engineering or a closely related field.
- L-C: Ph.D. in computer or software engineering or a closely related field with at least seven years of professional experience, including teaching.
- L-D: Ph.D. in computer or software engineering or a closely related field with a minimum of twelve years of professional experience, including teaching, and an exceptional record of scholarly achievement.
- Applicants must exhibit a strong commitment to teaching excellence and possess a comprehensive understanding of computer/software engineering. Proficiency in both written and spoken English is mandatory.
- Ability to teach on the SJSU campus during late afternoon and evening hours as required by the department.
- Applicants should show awareness and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student population, which may have been gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or similar experiences.
Compensation

Faculty members must complete required CSU employee training based on their role. Employment is contingent upon U.S. residency and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment are conditional and may be rescinded if background checks reveal disqualifying information or if it is discovered that the candidate withheld or falsified information.
