Community Recreation Program Supervisor - Adult and Youth Engagement
This dynamic full-time role is ideal for a motivated and innovative recreation specialist dedicated to enhancing community well-being through engaging adult and youth recreational activities. The selected individual will undertake significant responsibilities in the design, promotion, and facilitation of diverse recreational programs, events, and excursions. A comprehensive understanding of community recreation, including fitness, wellness, aquatic activities, arts, and leisure pursuits, is essential. The ability to create unique and impactful programs, optimize financial resources, and communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats is crucial. Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in recreation, leisure services, or a related discipline, along with relevant experience in recreation and leisure services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Key Responsibilities
SUMMARY
This role involves the planning, organization, promotion, and development of a wide range of recreational opportunities for residents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the planning, coordination, and execution of recreational programs; overseeing and assessing program effectiveness.
- Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, supervising, and evaluating part-time program personnel.
- Evaluating programs and providing recommendations for their continuation.
- Coordinating and planning recreational services with educational institutions, community organizations, and other agencies, ensuring all necessary permits are obtained.
- Defining program content and scope; establishing goals and assessing outcomes.
- Assisting in budget preparation and monitoring expenditures.
- Researching and applying for grants to support new or existing programs.
- Promoting programs and services through various media channels.
- Leading programs, activities, or community events, including summer initiatives; assisting with participant registration.
- Ensuring the safe operation of city vehicles, including training staff and transporting participants.
- Scheduling and preparing recreation centers and facilities for use.
- Conducting research and compiling reports on recreational services.
- Participating in committees and maintaining relationships with community leaders.
- Assisting in the preparation of part-time payroll.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may involve supervising volunteers, instructors, and part-time staff, in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing complaints; and resolving issues.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in recreation, leisure services, or a related field; one to two years of relevant experience and/or training in recreation and leisure services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Information
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety guidelines, risk management plans, and procedural manuals. Proficient in writing reports and correspondence. Capable of effectively speaking before groups of citizens or employees. Ability to serve as a liaison with community groups.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to understand and execute instructions provided in written or oral form. Ability to address problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Professional certification as required.
