About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to oversee the planning, design, maintenance, preservation, and improvement of city landscapes and turf in parks, greenways, and other designated locations.

This is an exempt position that requires comprehensive knowledge of horticulture and landscape management principles and practices to design and maintain aesthetically pleasing parks and green spaces that invite residents and visitors to use the city's natural resources while establishing and maintaining sustainable landscapes and turf that encourage environmental sensitivity and stewardship.

The successful candidate will perform responsible work managing staff that performs professional horticulture and turf maintenance and management on city-owned parks and properties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, promote, develop, and coordinate various recreational programs and services.
  • Coordinate and direct the development and operation of recreation centers, fitness centers, and recreational activities.
  • Coordinate the promotion of programs and services.
  • Serve as a resource person for community civic groups, athletic associations, schools, churches, and other agencies.
  • Coordinate the use of volunteers and part-time staff.
  • Prepare periodic and special maintenance reports.
  • Review and revise departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist with city-wide special events.
  • Plan and direct youth and adult sports leagues and outdoor adventure/education programs.
  • Inventories and purchases equipment and materials.
  • Supervise the activities of youth, athletic, senior, outdoor adventure/education, aquatic, therapeutic, and community-based recreation programs.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation, leisure services, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience and/or training in recreational programs with administrative responsibility.
  • Valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Professional certifications as needed and required.

Work Environment:

The work environment is typically moderate, with occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions.
