EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST

POSITION OVERVIEW

The role of an Educational Support Specialist involves assisting the educator in facilitating the learning process for students. A diverse range of responsibilities is undertaken to enhance the educational experience under the guidance of established protocols and policies. Decision-making is exercised through careful judgment in determining the most effective course of action. Any discrepancies are expected to be identified swiftly by the supervisor and rectified with minimal repercussions. The position operates under the limited oversight of the educator and/or school administrator.

All Educational Support Specialists must be prepared to obtain a bus operator's license. While not required to manage a bus route, they must be available to act as a substitute bus operator when necessary.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic Support Provides group instruction as directed by the educator. Offers personalized instruction. Demonstrates various educational activities. Monitors assignments given by the educator. Reviews and corrects student work during the process. Keeps students focused on their tasks. Acknowledges and encourages student achievements. Communicates student progress to the educator. Instructional Preparation/Assistance Acts as a substitute educator when needed. Organizes classroom layout and resources. Develops visual aids. Copies instructional materials. Reorganizes resources at the conclusion of the day. Serves as a proctor during assessments. Participates in professional development workshops. Grades student assignments as directed by the educator. Distributes and collects educational materials. Maintains Records Checks and reports attendance. Inputs data into health records. Monitors Student Conduct Oversees students in the classroom and other areas. Creates and distributes recognition for positive behavior. Fosters student self-esteem. Teaches citizenship, social skills, and respect for peers. Mediates minor student disputes. Contributes to the formulation of discipline policies. Addresses misbehavior through approved techniques. Reports discipline issues to the educator or administrator. Informs supervisor of significant changes or lack of changes in student behavior.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Proficient understanding of effective strategies for engaging with children. Familiarity with core subjects relevant to the assigned grade level. Basic understanding of the educational organization and its community. Awareness of expected child behavior, including developmental characteristics. Competence in operating audiovisual equipment and standard office machinery. Ability to create educational aids that enhance lesson plans. Capability to comprehend the objectives of educator-designed strategies in relation to instructional goals. Ability to identify significant student behaviors and refer them to the supervisor. Skill in conveying information at the child's comprehension level. Capacity to apply recognition, reward, and disciplinary methods fairly and consistently. Ability to independently resolve most minor issues. Proficiency in following detailed written and verbal instructions without constant oversight. Ability to accurately record and manage data. Commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of student information.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must possess an associate's degree, successfully complete 48 semester hours, or achieve a level Four or higher on all three sections (Applied Math, Graphic Literacy & Workplace Documents) of the WorkKeys assessment. Equivalent combinations of training and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role are acceptable. Any alternatives to the above qualifications deemed appropriate and acceptable by the local board may be considered.
