Job Overview

The Finance Manager will be instrumental in supervising financial activities and resource management within a non-profit social service organization operating in a partially unionized setting. This position entails maintaining precise financial documentation, ensuring adherence to regulations, engaging in financial planning and analysis, forecasting, management reporting, variance analysis, and annual budgeting, while providing financial counsel to support the organization's mission and objectives.

The ideal candidate is a proactive professional with a minimum of 4 years of experience in financial planning, analysis, and management. They should possess a positive demeanor, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong sense of initiative. In this role, you will leverage business and program data alongside financial analysis to deliver insights, identify risks and opportunities, and assist departments in making informed decisions. You will oversee various billing and accounting functions in collaboration with all other business operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with organizational leaders to formulate and implement financial strategies that align with the organization's overarching goals.
  • Prepare and evaluate budgets, financial forecasts, and reports to furnish management with valuable insights.
  • Utilize business and program data alongside financial analysis to pinpoint risks and opportunities, supporting decision-making for department heads and senior leadership.
  • Monitor expenditure trends and advise management on cost-saving strategies while upholding program quality.
  • Oversee the budgeting process, collaborating with department heads to create, monitor, and adjust budgets as necessary.
  • Generate accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and union agreements.
  • Manage the financial components of grant applications, including budget formulation, tracking, and reporting.
  • Work alongside social services program managers to ensure appropriate allocation and effective utilization of funds within grant and contractual parameters.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage liquidity to meet operational requirements while adhering to financial objectives.
  • Coordinate and oversee financial and regulatory/grantor audits, ensuring accurate and comprehensive financial documentation.
  • Implement and uphold effective internal controls to protect financial assets and ensure precision.
  • Enhance financial systems and technological solutions to boost efficiency and accuracy.
  • Engage with union representatives to address financial issues related to employee compensation and benefits.
  • Work with department leaders to establish KPIs and consistently analyze program and department budgets.
  • Conduct quarterly reviews of program and financial status with various offices.
  • Manage the financial performance of reserves for optimal returns, including proposing investment policies.
  • Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinating activities with external audit firms and evaluating their performance.
  • Ensure that record-keeping meets the standards set by auditors and government entities.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Professional certification such as CPA or CMA is highly desirable.
  • 5+ years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in a non-profit context, with union-related experience being advantageous.
  • Experience collaborating with departments to deliver budgets and forecasts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of non-profit accounting principles, regulations, and compliance.
  • Proficiency in financial management software and systems, with experience in ERP and Financial Edge/Blackbaud being a plus.
  • Ability to translate organizational and team objectives into actionable steps and execute with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written, verbal, and remote communication.
  • Capacity to work collaboratively and adapt in a dynamic environment.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and QuickBooks.
