Job Summary

We are seeking a seasoned Global Employment Law Expert to join our team at Open Society Foundations.

This role requires an experienced attorney with a strong background in employment law and labor relations. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience working with US employment law and labor relations, as well as managing a relationship with a US union.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a global organization that values human rights and social justice. As a Strategic Counsel, Global Operations, you will provide expert advice on day-to-day labor and employment matters, including multi-jurisdiction re-organizations, reviewing and updating local, regional, and global employment-related policies and templates.

  • You will advise People & Culture and the organization on complex employment issues, including changes to terms and conditions, legal issues affecting employee benefit plans, and individual cases.
  • Working closely with external counsel, you will engage in large-scale projects such as equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives that require coordinated inputs from multiple specialist attorneys and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic advice to enable effective planning to maximize impact and realize strategy within regulatory frameworks and organizational policies/standards/processes.
  2. Advise on US benefit matters, including ERISA compliance, governance, and benefit plan design.
  3. Manage the relationship with our US union, including bargaining and other related matters.
  4. Engage external counsel when needed and co-ordinate advice as appropriate to ensure it is fit for the organization.
  5. Advising on transactions including consultancies, commercial contracts, licenses, and software agreements.
Requirements
  • Law degree or equivalent from an accredited university (law school) and admission to practice law in the jurisdiction where you would be based.
  • A minimum post-qualification experience of 5 years at a law firm and/or inhouse.
  • Experience and record of accomplishments with drafting and negotiating in matters requiring keen attention to detail with excellent follow-through.

We offer a competitive salary range of $145,100 - $275,700, influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set and level of experience.
