Fiber Technician Job Description

The Fiber Technician is a critical role within IES Communications, responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and splicing fiber optic cables. This position requires a high level of technical expertise and attention to detail to ensure the integrity of our communication systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install and terminate fiber optic cables, including simplex and duplex jumper cords
  • Perform testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic systems using OTDR and PMLS
  • Splice fiber optic cables using mechanical and fusion splicing techniques
  • Build and install fiber optic closets, including mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, and hardware
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required
  • Complete all IDC connections, including terminating 110/66 blocks and patch panels
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Proficiency in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems
  • Experience with testing and troubleshooting MMF and SMF systems
  • Ability to meet IES driving standards policy
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) preferred
Working Conditions:

The Fiber Technician will work in a fast-paced environment, often at heights, off of ladders, and in confined spaces. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds is required. The position also requires the ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
