About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke's Building Safety Team is seeking a highly skilled Combination Inspector to join our team. The selected candidate will conduct field inspections on active permits for code-compliant construction and plan reviews for compliance with applicable codes.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Must have a degree from a two-year college or technical school with major coursework and experience in building, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical systems.
  • Three to five years of related experience and/or training in the installations, repair, maintenance, or inspection of building, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical systems.
  • Combination I must have inspection certifications through ICC and/or the State of Virginia, including Residential Building, Residential Plumbing, Residential Mechanical, and Residential Electrical.
  • Combination II must have inspection certifications through ICC and/or the State of Virginia, including Residential Building, Residential Plumbing, Residential Mechanical, Residential Electrical, Commercial Building, Commercial Plumbing, Commercial Mechanical, and Commercial Electrical.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections on active permits for code-compliant construction.
  • Conduct plan reviews for compliance with applicable codes.
  • Review building plans and inspect new construction, additions, and alterations of buildings and structures for compliance with City and State codes and ordinances.
  • Examine plans, specifications, and materials; make inspections of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems for compliance with current code requirements.
  • Consult with architects, engineers, and the general public on technical assistance.
  • Stay abreast of new materials and building methods by attending seminars and lectures as new techniques are introduced.
  • Inspect quality of materials, methods of construction, and existing buildings for hazardous conditions.
  • Conduct research, as needed, and evaluate equipment, materials, and construction assemblies for compliance with USBC requirements and industry standards.
  • Utilize available electronic tools to assist in reviewing and processing permits and construction.
  • Utilize tools and equipment in the field to conduct inspections.
