Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Water Supply Specialist II to join our team at the City of Reno. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong understanding of water supply systems and fire prevention principles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and evaluate plans for buildings, sites, and street emergency vehicle access to ensure compliance with fire and building codes.
  • Discuss plan review requirements and design criteria with architects, engineers, developers, and property owners to ensure code compliance.
  • Inspect safety systems during various phases of construction to ensure compliance with fire and building codes.
  • Investigate complaints and recommend solutions regarding fire and life safety hazards and water or fire hydrant damage.
  • Conduct inspections of existing buildings, structures, or water systems to determine if hazardous or illegal conditions exist.
  • Document code violations and recommend modifications to rectify violations.
  • Ensure code conformance and issue notices of violation and misdemeanor citations for fire code violations.
  • Prepare reports and maintenance records regarding hydrant data, mapping, inspections, and other relevant information using an electronic database and office software.
  • Remain current with changes in local and state fire and related codes.
  • Maintain inventory control of parts, equipment, and supplies for repair of hydrants.
  • May occasionally supervise others.
  • Serve as liaison on behalf of the Reno Fire Prevention Division with various jurisdictions, state, federal government agencies, community organizations, and groups.
  • Repair and perform maintenance on fire hydrants and water supply systems as required.
  • Coordinate with utility companies and others to solve low pressure, water main upgrade, and other problems affecting adequate water supply availability.
  • Coordinate with local water authority to provide data for insurance rating purposes.
  • Develop and coordinate testing procedures for fire protection systems and fire hydrants.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of requirements and procedures of municipal water supply, distribution, and hydrant systems.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression water supply requirements.
  • Knowledge of fire hydrant location, construction, operation, and capacity.
  • Knowledge of mechanical techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fire insurance ratings, water testing procedures, and recordkeeping.
  • Knowledge of basic algebra as applied to calculation of hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Knowledge of common office software programs.
  • Knowledge of techniques for communicating effectively with the public.
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of fire department and division of prevention organization and operations.
  • Knowledge of codes, laws, and regulations relevant to fire prevention, protection.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention and protection components and the science of fire and firefighting.
  • Knowledge of modern fire prevention and protection principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior; common causes of fire and fire spread.
  • Knowledge of IFC, IBC, & NFPA standards.
  • Knowledge of fire protection equipment, systems, and appliance evaluation, testing, and approval.
  • Knowledge of fire department suppression operations, tactics, and strategies.
  • Knowledge of community educational methodology related to fire and life safety, human behavior during fire, and community risk assessment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain computer spreadsheets.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, plot plans, and maps.
  • Ability to react with judgment in emergency situations.
  • Ability to use specialty computer software programs.
  • Ability to effectively run water flow/pressure tests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
