Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Development and Implementation

  • Formulate and execute long-term R&D strategies that align with the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements to pinpoint avenues for innovation and expansion.
  • Collaborate with business units to establish project objectives that address market demands.
  • Facilitate effective communication between business and production teams to enhance product development.
  • Lead regular brainstorming sessions to share insights and provide updates on projects.
  • Conduct customer update meetings as necessary to relay project advancements.

Project Development

  • Engage with business and production teams to identify organizational needs and design corresponding R&D projects.
  • Conceptualize, plan, and schedule experiments in partnership with the R&D team.
  • Evaluate and interpret experimental data, troubleshooting assays and experiments as required.
  • Oversee the transition of technology and knowledge from R&D to production and commercialization teams.
  • Collaborate with production teams to address any challenges during scaling and manufacturing phases.

Team Leadership

  • Guide and mentor individuals and teams within the R&D division.
  • Conduct one-on-one sessions, establish goals with direct reports, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Encourage a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the success of R&D initiatives.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on R&D performance to senior leadership.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to enhance R&D processes and boost overall efficiency.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of team members to cultivate a skilled R&D workforce.
  • Conduct interviews and assess candidates to ensure alignment with organizational culture and project requirements.

Intellectual Property Oversight

  • Identify and safeguard intellectual property (IP) generated from R&D endeavors.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to file patents and manage IP portfolios.
  • Monitor the competitive IP landscape to ensure operational freedom for new developments.

Risk Assessment

  • Identify potential risks and challenges in R&D projects and devise mitigation strategies.
  • Implement robust risk management practices to ensure project continuity and success.
  • Monitor and address any safety concerns within the R&D laboratory environment.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engage with key stakeholders to understand their needs and integrate feedback into R&D projects.
  • Communicate R&D progress, achievements, and challenges to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ensure transparency and alignment between R&D activities and stakeholder expectations.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in developing biocatalytic processes and engineering proteins.
  • Demonstrated success in managing long-term projects and leading R&D teams.
  • Strong project management background, with the ability to conceive, plan, and execute complex experiments.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience in hiring, mentoring, and managing individuals and teams.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • High adaptability and problem-solving skills in a dynamic research environment.
