Position Overview

The role of a Bridge Maintenance Worker involves a variety of essential tasks aimed at ensuring the integrity and safety of bridge structures. Below are some key responsibilities associated with this position:

  • Conducts and oversees necessary repairs and installations in the fabrication and erection of bridge structures.
  • Engages in concrete work for the construction and maintenance of bridges and related structures.
  • Performs carpentry tasks related to the upkeep of bridges, buildings, and other structures.
  • Prepares surfaces of bridges and structures for painting through cleaning and preparation.
  • Participates in or leads safety inspections on bridges and structures to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Operates a full range of heavy machinery utilized by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
  • Establishes appropriate traffic control layouts in line with the Traffic Control Field Manual.
  • Identifies necessary equipment, tools, materials, and supplies required to complete assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Class B Commercial Driver's Permit without Air Brake Restrictions and a Tanker Endorsement (written test only). A Class A Commercial Driver's License with no Air Brake Restrictions and Tanker Endorsement must be obtained within five months of being placed in this role. On-the-job training will be provided to assist in obtaining the driving portion of the test for a Class A CDL.

Experience Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in carpentry, concrete, or iron work; or a combination of these activities.
  • Examples of carpentry include building construction, repairs, or framing.
  • Concrete work experience may involve grading, bridge construction, repair, and maintenance, as well as forming, placing, and finishing concrete.
  • Iron work experience may consist of structural steel erection, setting anchor bolts, and rebar placement.
  • A two-year technical degree in trades such as carpentry or concrete/masonry may substitute for one year of experience.
