About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Behavioral Health Specialist to join our team at UNC Health. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will play a critical role in providing crisis intervention and mental health services to individuals and families in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Healthcare Professionals: Establish strong working relationships with emergency department nursing personnel, physicians, and other community healthcare professionals to ensure effective assessment and disposition of psychiatric patients.
  • Crisis Intervention and Assessment: Provide crisis intervention and psychosocial assessments to individuals and families presenting to the emergency department or inpatients at UNC Health.
  • Facilitate Involuntary Commitment: Facilitate the involuntary commitment process as directed by the medical director.
  • Patient Safety and Support: Assist with ensuring patient safety of behavioral health patients as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Community Referral and Support: Utilize appropriate community referral and support sources for behavioral health patients requiring social work, case management, or discharge planning assistance.
  • Patient Education and Involvement: Involve patients and families in the assessment and planning process, educating them regarding care options and involving them in the decision-making process.
  • Level of Care and Financial Resources: Investigate the level of care and financial resources required to formulate plans for patients.
Requirements
  • Education: Master's degree in social work, counseling, or a related human services field.
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Licensure: Licensed in the state of North Carolina as a social worker, counselor, or in a related field.
  • Experience: 5 years of experience in crisis counseling or mental health counseling.
