Overview
The Commissioner of the Revenue serves as one of Loudoun's five elected constitutional officers. Our goal is to support citizens and the business sector by managing tax programs as mandated by the Code of Virginia and local ordinances, ensuring efficiency, fairness, equity, and thoroughness while safeguarding the confidentiality of personal and business information.
Position Summary
The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is looking for qualified candidates for the role of Commercial Tax Evaluator.
The ideal candidate will engage in complex professional tasks, independently evaluating business licenses, tangible personal property, and local excise taxes. Providing exceptional customer service in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is essential. The candidate will be expected to apply state tax codes, case law, and local regulations to guarantee fair, equitable, and uniform assessments for businesses. Responsibilities include analyzing business operations, tax filings, and other relevant records to ensure accurate classification and assessment for business licenses, tangible personal property, excise, and other local taxes. Interaction with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals will be necessary to ensure compliance with local tax regulations. The candidate must be prepared to defend assessments in discussions with office management, the Treasurer's Office, and the County Attorney's office regarding collection, bankruptcy, appeal, and litigation matters.
Candidates must possess exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills. Familiarity with business structures and income taxation (both Federal and Virginia) is required. The ability to meet deadlines, solve problems, and manage multiple tasks is crucial. Quick adaptability to new automated software systems is necessary. Candidates should maintain composure under pressure, communicating clearly, empathetically, and professionally in challenging customer service scenarios. Flexibility in adapting to changing work priorities while exercising sound professional judgment and maintaining confidentiality of tax information is essential. Court testimony may be required as necessary. Participation in professional training to stay updated on federal, state, and local tax laws is expected.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Minimum Qualifications
A combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree (bachelor's preferred) in Business, Management, Finance, or a related field, along with three (3) years of relevant experience is required. Knowledge of business structures, state and federal taxation, business procedures, and accounting practices is desirable. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
The successful candidate will undergo a criminal background check, credit check, and DMV record check.
A valid driver's license in Virginia or a regional state of residence is required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is necessary. The ability to tour various commercial facilities is also required.
