Job Summary

Smithfield Foods is seeking a highly skilled Automation and Controls Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our automation team, you will be responsible for the development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of electrical control systems at our facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, operate, and maintain electrical control systems
  • Help define and update the long-term technology roadmap of the plant
  • Maintain current backups of all automation infrastructure
  • Combine fundamental controls and process knowledge with recent advances in automation to deliver creative solutions
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and Variable Frequency Drives
  • Repair electrical systems and serve as a mentor for less experienced floor electricians
  • Work on the production floor in a hands-on engineering environment
  • Plan and execute projects from start to finish with minimal supervision
  • Look for production process improvements to minimize downtime and facilitate troubleshooting
  • Develop standard software and hardware architectures for automation projects
  • Work with multiple teams for coordinated implementation
  • Drive the right technology choices for automation and present the technology roadmap for both immediate and long-term growth
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of controls engineering experience
  • Industrial manufacturing experience required
  • Food or pharmaceutical manufacturing experience preferred
  • Experience troubleshooting and programming Rockwell PLCs, HMIs, and Variable Frequency Drives
  • Experience troubleshooting and programming Siemens PLCs, HMIs, and Drives
  • Experience troubleshooting hardwired systems and print reading
  • Networking experience is a plus
  • Previous experience with the Ignition platform is a plus
